MICHAEL D. EVANS, Administrative Director of the Courts
Michael D. Evans graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1965. That same year he enrolled at Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in history. In 1970, he was admitted to the school of law at the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1973 with a juris doctorate degree.
Mike was hired as an assistant district attorney for Tillman County in southwest Oklahoma in August 1973, -- serving in that capacity on three occasions: 1973 – 1980; 1981 – 1982 and 1996 – 1997. In 1974, he opened his own private practice in Frederick. In 1976, Mike was joined by David M. Curtis, and they practiced together until 1982. At that time, Mike joined his mentor and friend Anthony M. Massad. In 1990, John P. Kent joined the firm, and in 2004, Michael Ty Johnson became an associate with Massad, Evans & Kent, Inc.
Mr. Evans is a “general” practitioner in every sense of the word. He served as the city attorney for the City of Frederick from 1982 through 2005. While in private practice he spent most of his time in the following practice areas: agricultural law, bankruptcy, civil litigation, contracts, criminal law, domestic relations, foreclosure, municipal law, probate and real estate. Mike currently serves as the Administrative Director of the Courts under the auspices of the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
In addition to his service as city attorney, Mike served three terms as the president of the Frederick Chamber of Commerce; served as the president of the Frederick Jaycees, Frederick Rotary Club and Frederick Golf & Country Club; received the Lion’s Club award for Frederick’s Most Useful Citizen; and is a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.
Mr. Evans served on the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Professional Responsibility Commission from 1990 through 1995 and as its chair in 1992 and 1995. In addition, Mike has served on the OBA Board of Governors (1996 – 1998), as vice president in 2001, president elect in 2004, and president in 2005. In 1996, he became the second recipient of the Masonic Award for Ethics (now named the John Shipp Award for Ethics). He has also served as a Trustee on the Board of the Oklahoma Bar Foundation and is an OFB Benefactor Fellow. Mike has been a member of the American Bar Association since 1990 and is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
Michael D. Evans married Lola L. “Vonnie” Lawrence of Chandler in 1969. Vonnie is a junior high school teacher in Edmond, Oklahoma. Mike and Vonnie have two children – Kay Thompson and her husband, Bobby, from Dallas; and Kelly Whitworth and her husband, Clint, from Edmond, who are both practicing lawyers in Oklahoma City. Mike and Vonnie are also the proud grandparents of three grandchildren: Cody, Logan, and Tanner.
